Best Time of Day for Outdoor Family Photos (And Why Golden Hour Wins Every Time)
So… what actually is the best time of day for outdoor family photos?
Here’s the thing.
If you’ve ever Googled the best time of day for outdoor family photos, you’ve probably seen the same answer again and again. Golden hour.
And yes… there’s a reason for that.
Golden hour, that dreamy window just before sunset, really is the best time of day for outdoor family photos. Not because photographers like to make life awkward. But because it gives you something you just can’t get at any other time of day.
Softer light. Calmer energy. And photos that actually feel like you.
I’m based in Salisbury and offer golden hour family photoshoots across Wiltshire, Hampshire and Dorset, so I see first-hand just how much of a difference that timing makes, whether we’re on the beach, in woodland, in open meadows or tucked away in beautiful natural spots.
Why is golden hour good for photography?
Let’s break it down a bit, because it’s not just hype.
The light is softer (and way more flattering)
Midday light is harsh. There’s no polite way to say it. It creates strong shadows, makes everyone squint and generally isn’t that forgiving.
Golden hour light is the opposite. It’s soft, warm and wraps around you in a way that just works. Skin tones look natural. Everything feels a bit more glowy.
No awkward shadows. No squinting eyes.
Just… easy.
Everything feels calmer
This is the part people don’t expect.
Even the busiest, most energetic children tend to slow down a little in the evening. The day is winding down. There’s less rush. Less overstimulation.
And that shift? It shows in your photos.
You get more connection. More cuddles. More real moments.
It creates that natural, unposed look
If you’re here, I’m guessing you don’t want stiff, “everyone look at the camera and smile” kind of photos.
Golden hour helps create those in-between moments. The running, the laughing, the holding hands without thinking about it.
The good stuff.“
But… bedtime?” Let’s talk about it
I know. This is the big one. You’ve spent years building a routine that works. The idea of pushing bedtime back can feel like chaos waiting to happen.
But here’s the thing. It’s one evening.
One slightly later night in exchange for photos that actually feel like your family, in a setting that gives you the best possible light.
And more than that, it becomes a memory in itself.
An evening spent outside. Slowing down. Being together without rushing through the usual routine.
Honestly? It’s always worth it.
Family photoshoot myths that might be holding you back
Let’s gently bust a few of these.
“My children need to be perfectly behaved or I can’t book a shoot.” They don’t. At all. The best photos come from movement, personality, and real interactions.
“We have to stick to routine no matter what.” Most of the time, yes. But this is one of those moments where it’s okay to bend it a little.
“If it’s later, it’ll be chaos.” Sometimes it’s the opposite. Children can be more relaxed, more cuddly, more themselves.
“I don’t need to be in the photos, I just want photos of my children.” Mums. You NEED to be in the photos. If not for yourself, for your children. Pop over to this blog to read more of my thoughts and experience about this…
How to prepare for a golden hour family photoshoot
You don’t need to overthink this. A few small tweaks go a long way.
Shift the day slightly: If you can, adjust naps or slow the afternoon down a bit. Nothing drastic. Just enough to take the edge off.
Feed everyone: This is non-negotiable. A meal before you leave in the car. Maybe even a little treat. Happy children with full tummies make everything easier.
Let go of perfect. The more relaxed you are, the more your kids will be too. You don’t need perfect behaviour. You just need to show up.
Make it feel like an adventure: Talk about it like it’s something fun you’re doing together, not something they have to “behave” for. That shift in mindset makes a huge difference.
What actually happens at a golden hour session
This is my favourite part.
Last year, I arrived for a golden hour shoot and before I’d even properly said hello, the eldest daughter ran straight over and gave me a hug. For the rest of the session, she was my little shadow. Holding my hand as we walked between spots. Chatting away like we’d known each other forever. Honestly, it felt like I’d gained a new little best friend.
And that’s exactly what these sessions are like.
Relaxed. Playful. Sometimes a bit chaotic in the best way.
We move. We explore. You cuddle your kids, laugh with them, just be with them. No pressure. No stiff posing. Just your family, as you are.
So… is golden hour really the best time of day for outdoor family photos?
Short answer? Yes.
Longer answer? If you want soft light, relaxed energy and photos that actually reflect your family, golden hour gives you all of that in one go.
It might mean a slightly later bedtime. But it also means photos you’ll love.
